I was raised in the suburbs; I vaguely remember touching a cow or two when I was very young. What were we thinking? Fortunately, Rick was raised in the country and had experience with livestock.
Dexters were the perfect choice for me/us. Smaller cows, docile, multi-purpose, and the option for no horns. We also decided to go with the Dexter rainbow, from light dun to black with many shades of dun and red in between. Although I realized that sending some steers to freezer camp would be unavoidable (whimper), our goal was to focus on breeding stock.
It hasn’t all been easy… or cheap… to develop the infrastructure and equipment needed, but seeing our healthy calves alternating between nursing and getting the zoomies has made it all worthwhile.
Dexters were an integral part of our desire to become more self-sustaining. Rick built some wonderful gardens and I’ve continued to learn more and deal with food preservation. These cows can be milked if desired and will supply us with top quality meat for our freezer.
We truly enjoy our Dexters and hope you will as well. I would rather sit on the porch to watch ‘cow tv’ than a movie 😊
